WHAT WE DO

Hunger and poverty in Africa

Africa, a continent endowed with immense natural and human resources as well as economic diversity remains underdeveloped. This continent has been plunged into abject poverty because it has suffered a lot from military dictatorships, civil unrests, and wars. It remains the poorest continent on earth, it could equally be said the other way round ----- hunger in the land of plenty, there is food for all, yet hunger persists.

Drought across the countries of the continent of Africa ----- Mozambique, Angola, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and in South Africa to mention a few, is threatening million s of human lives and animals. 5,000,000 Zimbabweans and 2000 elephants need food because of drought that has devastated crops in these African countries. Millions of people will starve unless aid is immediately doubled. 32 of the world’s 48 least developed countries are in Sub-Saharan Africa. As the drought tightens its grip along these zones, Christian Relief and Development Agency report a worrying increase in the number of children coming onto the street in desperate search of food and money.

More than 45 percent of the population of Sub-Saharan Africa live in extreme poverty, this percentage live on less than a dollar a day and as a result of this crisis, the poor are still illiterate or barely literate, their children have limited opportunities to learn and do not have a chance to move out of poverty by acquiring skills and knowledge. The dynamics of education in these poverty stricken countries of Africa is a critical link in the intergenerational transfer of knowledge. Equality of education and social opportunity in these areas is a focal point.
